Make it Monday: Hummus

How To Make Hummus

This is a pretty simple recipe for making your own hummus. Hummus is a chickpea spread common in Mediterranean countries. It makes a healthy, protein rich snack and can be eaten with vegetables or with pita or naan bread. It is actually quite simple to make!

Technically “real” hummus has tahini in it. But tahini is kind of expensive and I’ve found it doesn’t really alter the taste too much, so I don’t feel it’s necessary.

This recipe is best made with a food processor or at least a chopper. I’ve tried doing it by hand with a ricer and it doesn’t work so well.

1 15 oz can of chickpeas or garbanzo beans

3 TBSP lemon juice (depending on taste)

1-2 cloves garlic (depending on if you like more or less garlic taste)

1/4 teaspoon salt

3 TBSP olive oil

In a food processor, puree the garbanzo beans and garlic. Then add the salt, lemon juice and olive oil. If you feel the consistency is still too thick, you can add a little more olive oil or a bit of Greek yogurt. You can also add a tablespoon or two of tahini instead, if you feel you really want it!

My favorite way to serve it up it with tabouleh and pita or naan bread!
