Tasty Tuesday: My Favorite Homemade Brownies

Caramel Brownies

If you’ve never made homemade brownies from scratch–well, you just don’t know what you’re missing! This recipe is great, and using caramel wraps I got from Concord Foods, I managed to make it even better! I will share the basic recipe here and adding caramel or not doesn’t really change anything. Either way they’re delicious! Ingredients:

1 cup (2 sticks) butter

4 1 oz squares semi-sweet chocolate (I use Baker’s)

2 cups sugar

2 tsp vanilla

4 eggs

1 1/2 cups flour

1 tsp baking powder

1 1/2 tsp salt

First, melt the butter and chocolate on the stove. You may be able to use the microwave, but I use the stove. Once it is all melted and mixed together, allow it to cool.

Meanwhile, mix the flour, salt and baking powder in one bowl, and in your mixer bowl beat together the eggs and sugar. Then slowly add the chocolate mixture and vanilla followed by the flour mixture. Mix until well blended.

Pour batter into a greased 13×9 pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Allow to cool about 20 minutes before cutting into squares.

For “Turtle” Brownies: Pour half the batter in the pan, spread it evenly, then add your caramel. I used 4 caramel wraps, but you could probably use 1/2-3/4 cup of caramel for your layer. If you want, stir in about 1/2 (more if you want) chopped walnuts into the remaining batter and pour on top of the caramel layer. Bake at 350 degree for 30 minutes.

  2. I have never had success in making homemade brownies. They either turn out dry or to moist and fall apart. I really like your recipe and would like to try it. Your picture of these brownies looks so yummy!

  3. This recipe sounds like the recipe of someone whose brownies I adore ! I think it is the butter. I would to try the turtle brownies – I think they would be wonderful to bring along to a get together, too !
