Make it Monday: Produce Wash

Homemade Fruit and Vegetable Wash

Homemade Fruit and Vegetable Wash

So, you’d really like to clean your produce rather than just rinsing it under cold water, but fear that soaking it may make it lose flavor or “leach” some of the nutrients out. Well, you can “disinfect” your produce of many chemicals by making your own fruit and vegetable wash.
Vinegar, lemon juice and baking soda are all commonly touted as effective cleaning agents. Well guess what? They are also edible. Who hasn’t used one or all of these in recipes? So it falls to reason that you could use these to help remove “bad stuff” from your food, right?

This recipe works best with a spray bottle (makes it last longer) and you would want to remove any actual dirt first, and keep it in the fridge when you’re done. You can double this recipe, but if you try to make a full bottle, proceed with caution! (more on that below)

     1/2 cup water
     1/2 cup vinegar
     1 TBSP lemon juice
     1 TBSP baking soda

Add all the the liquids first. Then a very little bit at a time, add the baking soda. Did you hear me? Add a TINY amount at a time!!! If you dump it all at once, you will get a geyser! I speak from expereince! Baking soda and vinegar are the imgredients in a baking soda volcano, after all!
Okay, now that I’ve sufficiently hammered that into your heads, feel free to go give it a try! Wait until right before preparing to spray, lightly scrub and rinse your produce. Otherwise the vinegar might “marinate” it!

  1. Remember back in the 80s when Meryl Streep spearheaded produce washing for children’s health? And today I can’t find anything like in my local supermarket. Thanks for the info – and the warning because I’ve seen those geysers. Kudos!
