Make it Monday: Citrus Enzyme Cleaner

Citrus Enzyme Cleaner

Well, if you haven’t heard about Citrus enzyme cleaner, it’s about time you did. Especially if you’re into making your own cleaning products. While I can’t say I have no commercial cleaning products, I am gradually trying to “wean” myself off of them one at a time. Each time I run out of one, I try to replace it with something natural and homemade.
Why? Well, for one thing, there are less chemicals involved. Actually, no chemicals. which is great for the environment, and your household, since you don’t have dangerous substances lying around.
Another big reason, is it saves money. Most homemade cleaners are made from things you probably have on hand anyway. And the citrus enzyme cleaner is no exception. Which brings me back to my main point.
There are lots of recipes out there for homemade citrus enzyme cleaner out there, but the simplest one by far I’ve found comes from Slightly Steady. All you do is fill up a jar with citrus peels (lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, doesn’t matter) top the jar of with distilled vinegar and let it sit in a window for 2 weeks. It’s even better if it has a little flesh left (like when you’ve squeezed the juice from a lemon)When it’s done, put one part citrus enzyme with one part water in a spray bottle and use as a general cleaner. So simple.
Other recipes call for sugar and/or yeast and/or require 3 months’ fermentation. Does this make it more effective? I’m not entirely sure. But what I do know is vinegar alone is supposed to be a great cleaning agent (especially when combined with baking soda) and straight vinegar stinks. Lemon juice is also a great cleaner (and great smelling). So at the very least, sitting in the citrus peels doesn’t hurt the vinegar smell! And either way, vinegar is still a great cleaner. 🙂

  1. great recipe. ive made this so many times. but its not enzyme cleaner. this is more of a highly involved citrus infused vinager cleaner.

  2. I know a number of people in my local community who’ve been making this at home and I’ve heard nothing but great things. I’m going to break down and finally try it, too. I love the idea of a natural cleaning option.
