DIY Flavored Syrups

Have you ever made flavored syrups? They are actual very simple to make. You can use them for coffee, hot chocolate, italian sodas, ice cream toppings and more. They can be something fruity, like cherry or something like chocolate or vanilla.

First, you start by taking a simple syrup with equal parts sugar and water. If you want to use fresh fruit in your syrup, use about a cup of peeled fruit per 3/4 cup equal parts sugar and water. If using extracts, use about a TBSP for the same.

I made cherry, orange and vanilla flavored syrups with this recipe:

3/4 sugar

3/4 water

1 cup fruit OR 1 TBSP extract

Mix all of the ingredients in a small saucepan and place on the stove at medium heat, approximately 10 minutes. It will come to low simmer. Remove from heat and allow to cool about 5-10 minutes.

Pour the flavored syrup into jars or bottles. If using the fresh fruit option, use a mesh strainer to keep the fruit from going into the jar.

The syrup is best stored in the refrigerator for up to a month. Use your syrups in coffee, flavored drinks or even homemade snow cones.

What would you use flavored syrups for?

  1. Very neat idea, I can see using these with my baked goods. I really like the idea of using butter nut extract.

  2. Yummy! I make my own pancake syrup and my own chocolate syrup. I know my oldest daughter makes simple syrup for cocktails and this seems to be the same basic process.
